Should you convert JPG to TIFF?

A printer, publisher or stock workflow wants TIFF rather than JPG.

Worth it when an app or an editor needs TIFF, or before you edit the picture several times. TIFF won’t restore the detail JPG already threw away, and the file will be larger, but nothing more is lost from here on.

Bear in mind TIFF is has patchy support: it works in photo editors, macOS Preview and Windows Photos, but not Chrome, Firefox or most upload forms.

JPG is a lossy photo format that trades detail you can’t see for much smaller files; TIFF is a high-fidelity format used by scanners, printers and archives. Use TIFF when a printer, publisher or archive asks for it, or for master copies of scans.

What changes when JPG becomes TIFF

TIFF can’t add back what JPG removed

The JPG was compressed when it was saved, and that detail is gone. TIFF records exactly what the JPG contains now, compression marks included, and keeps it that way however often you edit and re-save.

Expect a much larger file

TIFF is far bigger for the same content. Choose it because something needs TIFF, not to send or store the file. JPG: A 12-megapixel phone photo is usually 2–5 MB. TIFF: A scanned A4 page can be 20–50 MB.

Why it doesn’t upload

Changing a picture’s format is work your browser already knows how to do. Sending your photos to a server first only adds waiting and risk, so nothing is sent.

  • About the JPG. Re-saving a JPG again and again degrades it, because each save compresses the already compressed version. Keep an original and export to JPG once, at the end.
  • About the TIFF. Multi-page TIFFs from scanners look like one picture in some viewers, so pages go unnoticed when converting.
  • DDS, PSD, EXR, XWD and JPEG 2000 are read by the FFmpeg engine, a one-time 31 MB download.

Will converting JPG to TIFF lose quality?

No further quality is lost: TIFF keeps exactly what is in the JPG. It can’t undo compression the JPG already has.

Will the TIFF be smaller than the JPG?
